Affiliate FAQ

Everything creators ask before joining. Commission details, tracking mechanics, promotion rules, product access, and dispute handling — all answered in one place.

Earnings & Payouts

How much commission do I earn per sale?

30% of the sale price on all 6 SKUs. TF Debug Bible ($29) = $8.70 per sale. AI Prompt Vault ($9) = $2.70 per sale. Indie Toolkit 2026 ($29) = $8.70 per sale. All other $9 packs = $2.70 each. Commission is calculated on the customer's final purchase price — if they apply a coupon (with your permission), your commission adjusts proportionally.

When do I get paid my commission?

Monthly when your balance reaches $30 (Gumroad minimum). Once you hit $30 in earned commissions, Gumroad pays out on the next payout cycle (typically within 5–10 business days). Payouts go to your connected PayPal or Stripe account. If you earn $15 in month 1 and $20 in month 2, you'll receive payment after the second month when the cumulative balance crosses $30.

Is there a minimum payout threshold?

Yes — $30 minimum balance required. This is Gumroad's standard. With a $29 product at 30% commission ($8.70), you need 4 sales to hit the threshold. With $9 products ($2.70 commission), you need 12 sales. If you have $20 accumulated and haven't made a sale in 6 months, you may contact us to request a manual payout below the threshold (no guarantee).

Do I need to file a tax form (1099)?

Gumroad handles tax compliance, not us. Gumroad reports affiliate earnings to the IRS (US residents) via 1099-MISC and provides international tax compliance support for non-US affiliates. You don't invoice us or deal with our accounting — it all runs through Gumroad's affiliate system. Keep your own records for your accountant or tax advisor.

What currency do I get paid in?

USD by default, via your PayPal or Stripe account. All products are priced in USD on Gumroad. Your payout is in USD. If you're in a non-USD country, PayPal or Stripe will convert at their exchange rates when you withdraw to your local bank. Gumroad does not support direct payout in other currencies — conversion happens at the payment processor level.

Tracking & Cookies

How does Gumroad track which sales come from my affiliate link?

Gumroad uses HTTP cookies and URL parameters. When someone clicks your unique affiliate link, Gumroad stores a tracking cookie (typically a session ID) in their browser. If they purchase within the cookie window, the sale is credited to you. The cookie includes the affiliate ID, source, and timestamp. Your Gumroad dashboard shows click-through rates, conversions, and revenue in real time.

How long does the tracking cookie last?

Gumroad's standard cookie window is 30 days. If someone clicks your link today and buys within 30 days, you get credit. If they wait 31 days or clear their cookies, the sale won't be attributed to you. This is a standard affiliate tracking duration across most platforms (similar to Amazon, Substack, etc.). For high-ticket products, consider longer followup sequences within the 30-day window.

What if someone clears their cookies after clicking my link?

You lose attribution if they clear cookies before purchase. This is a limitation of cookie-based tracking. If a buyer clears their browser data, cache, or uses incognito mode after clicking your link, the original tracking cookie is lost. They can click your link again to re-establish it, but one-click attribution won't work after a browser reset. To mitigate, share links in high-friction channels (email, articles) where buyers are likely to convert quickly.

Do different browsers or devices reset my tracking?

Yes — each device/browser is tracked separately. If someone clicks your link on mobile, then later switches to desktop without clicking your link again, the desktop purchase won't be attributed to you. Each browser/device has its own cookie storage. For mobile-heavy audiences, this can impact attribution. Consider asking readers to click directly from the device they'll purchase on, or use shorter content formats (direct links in product descriptions) to reduce friction.

Can I see click-through and conversion data?

Yes, in your Gumroad affiliate dashboard. Log into Gumroad, go to your affiliate section, and you'll see: total clicks per link, conversion rate (clicks → purchases), revenue generated, and payout status. Data updates daily. You can drill down by product, time range, and source. Gumroad also lets you add UTM parameters to your links for tracking in Google Analytics if you want deeper attribution analysis.

Promotion Rules & Disclosure

Do I have to disclose that I'm using an affiliate link?

Yes — disclosure is required by law (FTC, ASA, and most jurisdictions). You must clearly tell your audience that you're sharing an affiliate link and will earn a commission if they purchase. Common language: "This is an affiliate link — I earn a small commission if you buy through this link at no extra cost to you." Place disclosure before or immediately after the link. Hiding or burying affiliate disclosures can result in legal liability and loss of audience trust.

What channels can I use to promote affiliate links?

Most channels are fine: blogs, newsletters, social media, forums, YouTube descriptions. Approved channels: dev.to articles, Substack (newsletters + publications), YouTube descriptions, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Reddit, IndieHackers, Medium, personal blogs. Avoid: coupon aggregator sites (requires explicit permission first), spam email lists, paid search ads (Google Ads policy restricts some affiliate promotions — check their terms). Ask before using channels with strict monetization policies.

Can I send affiliate links in email newsletters?

Yes, as long as your email list is opt-in and you disclose the affiliate relationship. Email is an excellent affiliate channel. Gumroad explicitly allows affiliate promotion in newsletters. Your disclosure might look like: "I recommend the TF Debug Bible (affiliate link) — I earn ~$8.70 per sale at no cost to you." Avoid spam email lists or purchased databases — they violate Gumroad's terms and email marketing laws (CAN-SPAM, GDPR). Use a legitimate email service (Substack, ConvertKit, Mailchimp) with proper unsubscribe mechanics.

Can I offer discounts or bundles with my affiliate link?

No — you cannot override Gumroad's pricing or create personal discounts. You earn 30% of the list price set by the creator. You cannot add your own coupon codes, offer 10% off, or bundle products without explicit permission. Creating unauthorized discounts violates affiliate terms and can get you deactivated. If you want to negotiate a bulk discount or special bundle promotion, contact us first at jiejuefuyou@gmail.com for approval.

Products & Content Access

Will I get free copies of the products to review?

Yes — we provide free access for legitimate content creators. If you plan to write an article, create a video, or produce content reviewing the products, email jiejuefuyou@gmail.com with your affiliate link and a brief description of the content you'll create (blog post, newsletter issue, YouTube video, etc.). We'll grant you free access to the relevant SKUs. This ensures you can honestly review the product before recommending it to your audience. We do not provide free access for passive promotion without content.

Do I get notified when products are updated or new SKUs launch?

Yes, if you join our affiliate subscriber list. When you sign up as an affiliate, you can opt into email updates about product releases, pricing changes, new SKUs, and exclusive promotions. We send updates roughly once per month. You'll be notified about new content you can promote (e.g., the TF Debug Bible getting a new section, or a completely new product). High-value affiliates also get early access to launch pre-orders.

Can we do joint content or co-promotions?

Yes — collaborations are encouraged. If you want to write a guest article on our dev.to account, do a podcast interview, cross-promote on each other's newsletters, or run a joint affiliate campaign, email jiejuefuyou@gmail.com. We actively work with creators on content collaborations, guest posts, and co-authored guides. Joint promotions often outperform solo ones — your audience sees product context and creator credibility simultaneously. Let's discuss what works for your audience.

Can I resell or redistribute the products?

No — you cannot resell or redistribute the products you receive. Free access for review is for your personal use and content creation only. You cannot bundle them with your own products, redistribute them to email lists, or sell access to them elsewhere. Each product has a license agreement — violating it can result in legal action and affiliate account termination. If you want to bundle our products with your offering, contact us to discuss a wholesale or partner agreement.

Disputes & Support

What if my sales seem to be missing or not counted?

First, check your Gumroad dashboard for clicks and conversions. Compare clicks to purchases — if you see clicks but no sales, the buyer may not have completed checkout. If you see sales but no commission, the purchase may have been refunded within 30 days (see refund policy below). If you still suspect a tracking error, screenshot your Gumroad report and email jiejuefuyou@gmail.com with the date range, product, and approximate click count. We'll investigate with Gumroad support. Allow 5–7 business days for a response.

What happens if a buyer refunds their purchase?

Refunds within 30 days reverse your commission. Gumroad allows a 30-day full refund window. If a buyer refunds within 30 days, the commission is credited back to Gumroad and deducted from your balance. This protects creators and buyers alike. If a buyer refunds after 30 days, you keep the commission (Gumroad's policy). Track your monthly balance to account for refunds — they may reduce your payout below $30, pushing your next payout to the following month.

What's your policy on chargebacks?

Chargebacks are extremely rare for digital products. If a buyer disputes a credit card charge through their bank rather than requesting a refund through Gumroad, Gumroad handles the chargeback (they absorb the cost and chargeback fee). This does not reverse your commission unless the chargeback is successful and Gumroad adjusts your balance retroactively. Gumroad proactively disputes fraudulent chargebacks. If chargebacks become frequent from a single affiliate source, Gumroad may investigate for fraud.

How do I contact you if I have questions or issues?

Email jiejuefuyou@gmail.com for all affiliate support. Include: your Gumroad affiliate ID, the product name, the issue or question, and any relevant data (screenshot of dashboard, date range, etc.). Response time is 24–48 hours on weekdays. For urgent issues (suspected tracking errors, account suspension), mark your email as urgent. You can also reply in the Gumroad affiliate platform direct message if you have an established affiliate account.

Can I appeal if my affiliate account is suspended?

Yes — you have the right to appeal if suspended. Account suspensions typically occur for violating terms (spam promotion, unauthorized discounts, breach of FTC disclosure rules). If suspended, you'll receive an email explaining the violation. You can reply with an appeal, explaining your case and how you'll comply going forward. We'll review within 5 business days. If reinstated, your account remains active; future violations may result in permanent deactivation. Work with us to keep your account in good standing.
